The Journey Begins Here

Before one can get married in the US Virgin Islands, he/she must complete a marriage license and application (can be found below) with the VI Superior Court. The Family Division is open for the distribution of marriage licenses between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm (A.S.T.) Monday through Friday. Business casual attire is required when visiting the Court. No slippers or shorts are permitted when appearing before the Court. The Court is also open on Saturdays, Sundays and specific holidays by pre-arrangement only. There is a $150.00 surcharge per couple for this service. On Saturdays, marriage licenses are distributed between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm and between 9:30 am and 10:30 am on Sundays and specific holidays. The Family Division will be closed for business on the following holidays:

Before a marriage license can be issued, applicants are required to personally appear before the Clerk of the Court, or her designee, to be examined under oath as to the information provided in the application for license. A government issued form of identification is required. There is a ($100.00) non-refundable application fee, which must be paid when the application is filed. There is also a ($100.00) marriage license fee, which can be paid upon filing or at the time of pick up.

All marriage licenses must be typed and completed entirely. A letter stating the date of visit and length of stay must accompany the application. Only items 1 – 16 and 27 – 30 should be completed. All fees must be paid by certified check or money order payable to the Clerk of the Superior Court. There are no requirements for physical examination or blood tests in the Virgin Islands. However, if any of the marriage applicants have been previously divorced, it is required that a certified copy of the divorce decree be filed along with the application for examination by the Court prior to issuance of the license. There is an eight day waiting period before the marriage license can be picked up. We recommend submitting the application and license 30 days before arrival on island.
